One More Semester Down

my first and extremely expensive gold crown

Sorry about the lack of updates recently, but I’ve just been too busy preparing for my finals and closing out the semester that I really didn’t have any time to read or update this blog. I’ve finally completed another semester of dental school and if all the rumors are correct, this was suppose to be the hardest semester. So I’m hoping the coursework load will be going downhill from here, but who knows if it is or not. I’m just excited that I get two weeks off from school and I get to spend it with my friends and family. Most of my family already live in town so we’re just heading up north a bit to visit with them on Christmas day. Other than that, I’ll be catching up on some reading as well as some much needed sleep!

What about ya’ll? Do you have any plans for the holidays?

Santaland Diaries

Last weekend, in between studying for finals, I was able to sneak out for a few hours and attend the Santaland Diaries play that is currently airing at our local theatre. I have to say, watching Santaland Diaries definitely put me in the festive and holiday mood. Living down here in the south, its easy to forget that its already December. Our temperatures finally just dipped below 60 degrees this week and you can bet everyone has been complaining about the “freezing” temperatures. I know those of ya’ll up north are probably scoffing at us and calling us wussies, but 30 degrees weather is abnormal for us down here.

When my friend suggested that we go see Santaland Diaries, I just accepted the offer because I thought it was something to do besides studying. Plus I’m always looking for an excuse to distract myself and not study. It wasn’t until I got to the theatre that I realized Santaland Diaries was an essay written by David Sedaris about his experience working as an elf at a Santaland in Macy’s. Surprisingly enough, despite my love for memoirs, I haven’t read anything by him yet. I’ve heard his name thrown around a lot and people are always telling me how funny and amusing his books are, but I just haven’t found the time to read his books. That’s defintiely going to change now though.

If Santaland Diaries is just a small dose of Sedaris’s humor and antics, then I’m really excited to pick up one of his books. I was smiling if not right out laughing throughout the play. It usually takes a lot for me to really laugh out loud, but the play was hilarious and I’m sure a lot of the credit is due to Sedaris as well as the actor. I’m not sure if Santaland Diaries is playing in any other places, but if you do get the opportunity to see it, I would highly recommend it. Its funny and entertaining and if nothing else, it’ll put you into the holiday spirits.

Are you planning on seeing any holiday plays this season? I know The Christmas Carol is a must for a lot of people.

Where did October go?

my dentures in progress

I didn’t mean to take that long of a hiatus, but it was definitely nice to just back off from the internet and just relax. Also, I’ve been in a bit of a book funk and I haven’t really been reading much the past few weeks. I just haven’t found any good books that have caught my eye and I don’t know what I’m in the mood to read either. That’s probably one of the worse feelings in the world, when you’re surrounding by a ton of books and yet you feel like you have nothing good to read.

In the meantime though, I’m surviving my second year of dental school. I always heard that second year is the hardest year, but so far I’m actually enjoying it. I guess it’s because we spend more time in the lab and I get to work with my hands which is the main reason why I wanted to be a dentist in the first place. Check out the awesome pair of dentures I waxed up. I can officially make dentures now so let me know if you’re ever in need of a pair.  :P At the same time I can’t wait for Thanksgiving. I just want to hibernate all winter and catch up on all the sleep I’ve been missing out on. It was a good thing we got that extra hour of sleep last weekend.

I’m heading out of town this weekend, but hopefully I’ll be able to visit everyone’s blog in the coming weeks to see all the great books I’ve been missing out on. I’m definitely in need of a good book recommendation.

And It’s That Time of Year Again

It’s my favorite time of year again. Football season. I can’t wait for the season to kick off tonight with New Orleans playing against the defending champions, Green Bay.

College football started last week and I’m happy to say that the Houston Cougars defeated the UCLA Bruins in their game opener. You may remember that last season our star quarterback, Case Keenum, was injured in the game against UCLA and all our hopes and dreams went down the drain with him. Fortunately, from the way he was playing last Saturday, he picked up where he dropped off and I’m ready for another season filled with optimism and hope. Dare I say it? I think this is our season, both for the Texans and the Cougars. *Knock on wood*

Who are you rooting for now that football season has officially kicked back into gear?

DS2

I can’t believe how fast this summer has flown by. Is it really August already?! It’s that time of year again. Dental school starts up tomorrow and I’m absolutely dreading it. It’s not that I hate dental school or anything, but I just much rather lay out on the beach and read for fun than stick my nose in a book about pathology or pharmacology. I’m hoping to still be active on this blog, but from what the other students have told me, second year first semester is suppose to be the hardest semester of dental school. Hopefully I’ll still have some time to read books that I want to read, but who knows where this semester is going to take me.

Although I am happy to say that I finally did finish the Harry Potter series! Yay me! And I’m hoping to get a post up soon about my thoughts on the series as a whole. Quite honestly, I’m a little bummed out that it’s over. It’s almost like the end of my childhood or something. I mean Harry Potter has been around since I was 10 or 11. That’s more than half of my life. The end to an era. Definitely a bittersweet moment and I have a lot to say about the series. In the meantime I hope everyone is having a good Monday!
